Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

The_Delta_Jets-Chairfactory_Blues-Roll_With_It.wav

All right. Kicking us off we heard The Delta Jets sing their own song, "My Baby Blues". Then another Delta Jets song, "Roll With It".

You can find more about Something Blue at deltaboogie.com. We have information about the musicians, podcasts, and a liveblog discussion of the show in progress. That's deltaboogie.com. Log on and talk to me.

I met Pete Mitchell on the internet and now he's featured on Delta Boogie. He plays straight ahead Blues and Blues Rock with a definite Northeast Arkansas twang in spite of the fact that he's spent his life traveling all over England playing guitar and singing his songs. He's known as The Stratmaster and I'm sure you will love his clean guitar work.

Now here's Pete Mitchell, from the UK, playing two of his tunes from the "Cutting The Mustard" CD. We'll hear "Outside Looking In" and "Bee My Honey". Listen to these lyrics on "Outside Looking In". They are so personal and so universal at the same time.

Pete_Mitchell-Cutting_The_Mustard-Outside_Looking_In.wav
Pete_Mitchell-Cutting_The_Mustard-Bee_My_Honey.wav

And that's Pete Mitchell, The Stratmaster, doing his song, "Bee My Honey".

I'm Hairy Larry and you're listening to "Something Blue" on KASU, 91.9 FM.

Ok, I've got another rocking Blues from Pete Mitchell, "Play My Guitar".

Pete_Mitchell-Cutting_The_Mustard-Play_My_Guitar.wav
ODonel_Levy-Live_At_The_Sax-In_The_Mood_For_Love.wav

And that's Jazz and Blues legend, ODonel Levy, playing "In The Mood For Love" recorded live at The Sax Club in Singapore. OD is a great guitarist and frontman. He used to play with Dizzie Gillespie.

Now here's a sweet instrumental from The Delta Jets' "Chairfactory Blues" CD, an original called "Samantha". The Delta Jets are from Wisconsin and their CD is dedicated to the Mississippi musicians who traveled all the way to Wisconsin to record at the chair factory.

The_Delta_Jets-Chairfactory_Blues-Samantha.wav

The_Preachers-Yeah_Baby-24-7.wav
The_Preachers-Yeah_Baby-Alley_Cat.wav

All right, that's The Preachers Blues Band, a great Jump Blues band, doing "Alley Cat". Before that they did one they call "24-7". The Preachers feature Brian Batchley on harmonica and David Reo on guitar. They are from Ventura, California and they always bring their own swing to their shows.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU, the home of the Blues in Northeast Arkansas. Whether it's Blues on Saturday night or the live Blue Monday shows you can count on KASU to bring you the best in the Blues.

Now for a special treat. Here's The Idle Americans from Wynne, Arkansas recorded live at Blues Fest, September 16, 2007. These are all originals on this live concert recording. You will hear "Noiz NE", "Zorro Prowlin'", "Whateverland Theme", and "Springtime Jam". I'll let Jeremy Burnett introduce the band.

Idle_Americans-Blues_Fest_Sep_16_2007-Whateverland_Theme.wav
Idle_Americans-Blues_Fest_Sep_16_2007-Springtime_Jam.wav

And that's The Idle Americans, featuring John Shepherd on guitar, recorded live at Blues Fest, September 16, 2007. What a great show they put on. John Shepherd is a Blues Fest regular, one of the finest Blues guitarists in the world, and he has been featured on Something Blue many times. I love presenting live recordings made by people you know.

I'm Hairy Larry and you're listening to "Something Blue" on KASU, 91.9 FM. I work hard to promote local and regional musicians on my website, Delta Boogie, and on Something Blue. If you're a musician and you'd like me to help you get your songs out there contact me by email, hairylarry@gmail.com. Or contact me through my website, deltaboogie.com. Subscribe to the Delta Boogie newsletter and I'll keep you up to date on the latest goings on musically.

Closing us out here's a couple more by The Preachers Blues Band. Listen up now, they are definitely preaching the Blues. First the title track from their CD, "Yeah Baby", and then we will hear "Bring Me A Woman". I hope you've enjoyed all the great Blues we played this week. I'll tell you right now, "That's what I'm talkin' about." Please stay in touch and let me know what you think. Until next time this is Hairy Larry, reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

The_Preachers-Yeah_Baby-Yeah_Baby.wav
The_Preachers-Yeah_Baby-Bring_Me_A_Woman.wav

Ok, it's After Hours and I've got a couple of my own songs, some piano Jazz by The Geoff Lapp Trio, and a song by John Black. Kicking it we'll hear "Moonstruck Blues". Go to deltaboogie.com and click on Video to see the video of me singing this song. Then Geoff Lapp will play "Zack In The Box" followed by John Black singing "Betty Jean" from "The Soul Of John Black". Geoff Lapp will give us another one he wrote called "Yo Bro". And closing us out will be a childrens' song I wrote called "Shoes On Backwards". This is Something Blue After Hours. In the wee hours of the morning just kick back and enjoy.

Davis_Coen-podsafemusicnetwork-Some_Strange_Feeling.wav
Davis_Coen-podsafemusicnetwork-Precious_Time_Blues.wav

And that's three by Davis Coen, a Blue Monday performer from Memphis, Tennessee. We heard "Bad Luck Blues", "Some Strange Feeling", and "Precious Time Blues". Davis always puts on a great show.

Coming up next are two John Shepherd songs from his new CD, "So Low". John Shepherd is from Wynne, Arkansas. He's a Blues Fest regular and has been featured on Something Blue many times. Here he is now singing "Poor Boy" and "Lonesome Sundown".

John_Shepherd-So_Low-Poor_Boy.wav

All right, now that's the Blues. We'll have more from John Shepherd's new CD later in the show.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU. For more about the show log on to sbblues.com.

Ok now, we're going live. Here's The Big Wu recorded at Harmony Park in Clarks Grove, Minnesota, on May 23, 2009. We'll hear "Rhode Island Red" and "Children Are Crying".

-----

John_Shepherd-So_Low-Long_Black_Night.wav

And that's John Shepherd singing a Blues reminisce called "Long Black Night". I like that part where Albert King makes his guitar cry and sing. John recorded his new Cd, "So Low", in Jonesboro, Arkansas this year. He wrote all the songs and performs them without a band. Just his guitar and vocals. He is an extremely talented Blues guitarist in the tradition of Arkansas greats like Albert King, Son Seals, Roy Buchanan, and Fenton Robinson.

Just listen to his guitar work on this song, "You Just Don't Love Me".

John_Shepherd-So_Low-You_Just_Dont_Love_Me.wav

All right now, some great Blues from John Shepherd. John always puts on a great show at Blues Fest. His show with Idle Americans can be heard on the Live Music Archive and I'm working to get some more of his live shows up on the internet.

You're listening to KASU, the home of the Blues in Northeast Arkansas every Saturday night. And Something Blue is on the internet 24/7. You can hear podcasts of the shows whenever you want. Just go to sbblues.com. Follow the link to chat with me while the show's in progress.

Thanks to Delta Boogie Radio, the Live Music Archive, and the Podsafe Music Network for hosting songs for the podcasts.

Here's some great Blues from a famous Rock band, Little Feat. Recorded live in 1977 in Newcastle, we'll hear "Old Folks Boogie", "Dixie Chicken", and "Tripe Face Boogie". Listen to the lyrics on "Old Folks Boogie". I've got to admit I'm getting to where I can identify with that. Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

Now here we are back in 1977 and it's Little Feat, live.

Part 1

All right, Steve Smith and The Sneakers, just cooking through two of Steve's originals, "Mean Ol' Woman Blues" and "Forbidden Fruit". And kicking us off tonight we heard Greenleaf, a Blues rock band from Mississippi play "Drivin".

Log on to Delta Boogie on the internet for more about these musicians, Something Blue podcasts, videos, even a liveblog discussion of this show in progress right now. All this and more on deltaboogie.com.

And now, right here on KASU, here's the title track from the Steve Smith and The Sneakers CD, "Hoodoo Man".

Steve_Smith_and_The_Sneakers-Hoodoo_Man-Well_Have_A_Good_Time_Tonight.wav
Dallas_Hodge-Reelin-Divin_Duck.wav

And that's "Divin' Duck" by Dallas Hodge, Before that we heard "We'll Have A Good Time Tonight" by Steve Smith and The Sneakers.

Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis are giants in Country and Jazz but when they team up we get "Two Men With The Blues". Here they are now doing "Bright Lights, Big City"

Nelson_Marsalis-Two_Men_With_The_Blues-Bright_Lights_Big_City.wav

Part 2

Elvin_Bishop-The_Blues_Rolls_On-Struttin_My_Stuff.wav

Oh yeah, that's Blues legend, Elvin Bishop singing "Struttin' My Stuff". Bishop played with Paul Butterfield back in the sixties and since then when he's not fishing he's been playing the Blues.

Southern Star played Blues Rock and Country Blues in Northeast Arkansas in the eighties. They recorded a CD at Ardent in Memphis in 1989. Here's "Busted" written by Randy Gambill and Larry Jones.

Southern_Star-Southern_Star-Busted.wav
Southern_Star-Southern_Star-Slip_Away.wav
Southern_Star-Southern_Star-Lady_Of_The_Streets.wav

All right, two more from Southern Star, "Slip Away" and "Lady Of The Streets", both written by Randy Gambill. Randy, a Blues Fest regular, plays lead guitar on the CD.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU, home of the Blues in Northeast Arkansas every Saturday night.

Now for some more Dallas Hodge from his CD "Reelin". He wrote most of the songs on the CD. Here's "In The Wind", "Up The Country", and "Reelin".

Dallas_Hodge-Reelin-In_The_Wind.wav
Dallas_Hodge-Reelin-Up_The_Country.wav
Dallas_Hodge-Reelin-Reelin.wav

And that's the title track of the new Dallas Hodge CD, "Reelin". Dallas has played with many great musicians like Steve Marriott, Johnny Winters, Delbert McClinton, and Bonnie Raitt. He is also the front man for Canned Heat. It's great to hear him putting out his own stuff.

Closing us out tonight here's another original by Greenleaf, one they call "Lowdown". The whole Greenleaf CD is great. It takes me back to psychedelic Blues Rock in the sixties.

Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

Greenleaf-Greenleaf-Lowdown.wav

Tony_Furtado_Band-Trilogy_2002_03_30-Rising_Fog.wav

It's the Tony Furtado Band recorded live on March 30, 2002, at Trilogy Wine Bar in Boulder, Colorado. We heard "Rising Fog".

We're playing live recordings from the Live Music Archive tonight on Something Blue. KASU features the Blues every Saturday night but if you need some Blues in the middle of the week log onto archive.org on the internet for the rest of this show and many, many others.

Next up it's "St. John's Fire" and "False Hearted Lovers".

Tony_Furtado_Band-Trilogy_2002_03_30-St_Johns_Fire.wav
Tony_Furtado_Band-Trilogy_2002_03_30-False_Hearted_Lovers_Blues.wav

All right, Tony Furtado is getting it, live. KASU has Blue Mondays and Bluegrass Mondays. The Tony Furtado Band blends Blues and Bluegrass into a unique sound. Here's one more they call "The Ghost Of Blind Willie Johnson".

Tony_Furtado_Band-Trilogy_2002_03_30-The_Ghost_Of_Blind_Willie_Johnson.wav

We have a first tonight in After Hours. I met triv33 on the liveblog discussion of last weeks show and she turned me on to her husband's band, Cleetus, with her sister and her husband singing. It's great stuff and we're featuring four of their songs tonight. "Vengeance", "Risky Business", "Caught Up", and "All My Fault". All originals.

So without the liveblog discussion last week I would have never heard of them. And here they are in After Hours this week.

Also I noticed that the "Blues For Peace" CD by my family band, "Hairy Larry and The Flying Hungarians" never made it onto Delta Boogie Radio. A total oversight on my part. Probably because I never get all Caught Up.

From that CD we'll play "Blues For Peace", "Sneakin Round", "blue nines", "Ride Me To Heaven", and "Guitar Blues". "Blues For Peace" goes out to my YouTube friend, tweek72, and "Guitar Blues" goes out to the guitarist in Cleetus. I'm sure he'll relate.

It's After Hours on Something Blue so let's kick back and enjoy. That's what I'm going to do. Stay in touch.

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

Mike Dollins-Blues Guitar-Teaser.wav
Carl Holden-July 28 2005-Holden Or Folden.wav

All right, That's Carl Holden doing one he wrote called "Holden Or Folden". Before that we heard Mike Dollins singing his song, "Teaser". And kicking us off tonight was Chris "Stinger" Stevens with his Blues instrumental, "Bluz Duz".

I love a little bit of humor in my Blues. Here's three songs that will make you tap your foot and make you laugh. First Gary Sloan sings "Shirt". Then Memphis Gold is gonna "Test Drive That Woman". Then back to Gary Sloan with "Shoes Of The King".

Gary Alaska Sloan-Blues-Shirt.wav
Memphis Gold-Prodigal Son-Test Drive That Woman.wav
Gary Alaska Sloan-The TWILIGHT SLOAN-Shoes Of The King.wav

Possibly the funniest song I've ever heard. Thanks go out to Gary "Alaska" Sloan for "Shoes Of The King".

Now here's Memphis Gold singing the title track of his CD "Prodigal Son".

Billy Jones-my Hometown-Never Let You Go.wav
Mark Sallings and The Famous Unknowns-Upclose And Personal-TWBb Blues.wav
Billy Jones-my Hometown-You Upset My Soul.wav

Now that's what I'm talking about. Billy Jones "You Upset My Soul". Billy's new CD "My Hometown" is just great. Paves new ground. Before that we heard another Billy Jones song, the soulful "Never Let You Go". And in between there was Mark Sallings from Wynne, Arkansas blowing his Eb harp on the "TWBb Blues".

You're listening to "Something Blue" on KASU.

Ok, Mike Dollins is gonna Jazz jam us with "The Jam". Love the sax. And then "Stinger" Stevens is gonna get all sensual and down low with his own Jazz called, "Samba Para Mary".

Mike Dollins-Blues Guitar-The Jam.wav
Chris Stevens-Bluz Illuzion-Samba Para Mary.wav
Mark Sallings and The Famous Unknowns-Upclose And Personal-Marks Harpo.wav

And that's Mark Sallings and The Famous Unknowns playing one of my personal favorites, "Mark's Harpo".

Closing the show we're featuring Carl Holden with one he wrote called, "By Carl Holden". Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

Carl Holden-July 28 2005-By Carl Holden.wav

Welcome to Something Blue After Hours, the internet only extension of the Something Blue podcast where I can get more personal and play a wider variety of music than I do on the air.

I'm about to get as personal as it gets. My friend, Mark Sallings, who you just heard, was killed in an auto accident on the way to a gig. Mark was a great performer and a fantastic songwriter.

http://marksallings.com

http://deltaboogie.com/marksallings

Then my friend, Bix Smith died in his home. Bix was an outstanding Jazz guitarist and used to be a Blues Alley regular. He was also an accomplished artist and we hosted his paintings at the Blues Alley Gallery.

http://deltaboogie.com/deltamusicians/smithb/

The hardest thing about being a Bluesman is knowing that you'll never be able to jam with a good friend again. At least we can still play their music. So I'm starting off with Mark Sallings "Mighty Oaks" and "Unprotected Contact With The Blues" and then with Bix Smith playing guitar on Will Riley's CD I'll play "Rockabilly Shoes" and "A Whole Lot Of Love In His Eyes".

I cowrote the "Rockabilly Shoes" lyrics and I'm singing back to Will on the second verse. Now that I'm back in school I've been writing a lot of songs in a lot of genres. I'll close the After Hours segment with three of my recent recordings, "Younger Days", "Shoes On Backwards", and "Can You Really?". I hope you enjoy them.

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

Siegel_Schwall_Band-Flash_Forward-Going_Back_To_Alabama.wav
Spartacus_Jones--Homeland_Security_Blues.wav

All right now, that's Spartacus Jones with the "Homeland Security Blues", a message song for modern times. Kicking us off tonight we featured Buddy Guy and Junior Wells doing "Give Me My Coat And Shoes". Buddy Guy and Junior Wells are one of the greatest Blues duos of all time. They just know how to make that guitar and harmonica fit together. And in between there we heard the Siegall Schwall Band sing "Going Back To Alabama".

Thanks to musicalley.com for their catalog of podsafe music. Most of the songs I'm playing tonight I found through their excellent service.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU. Please visit our website at sbblues.com for podcasts, scripts, even a liveblog discussion of this show in progress. You can also visit the KASU website at kasu.org.

Sugar Blue is a fantastic harmonica player who really brings it to the Blues. Sugar Blue was raised in the theater scene in Harlem, New York. He learned from Blues, Jazz, and Folk music with influences including Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Bob Dylan, Brownie McGhee, and Roosevelt Sykes. He's worked with everyone from Junior Wells to Willie Dixon. His new CD is called "Code Blue". Here he is now with "Cold Blooded Man".

Sugar_Blue-Code_Blue-Cold_Blooded_Man.wav
Sugar_Blue-Code_Blue-Bluesman.wav

And that's Sugar Blue with another hot song from his "Code Blue" CD. A song called "Bluesman".

We're going back now to one of my lifelong favorite bluesmen, Buddy Guy. Buddy Guy is from Lousiana but he is associated with the Chicago Blues because of all his session work on Chess Records. He still has a presence in Chicago with his famous Blues Club, Buddy Guy's Legends. They host Blues Jams right in the loop. No telling who you'll hear playing there. Here he is now singing "Are You Losing Your Mind?".

Bob_Margolin-Up_And_In-She_And_The_Devil.wav

Oh yeah, that's Steady Rollin Bob Margolin singing "She And The Devil". Bob Margolin played with Muddy Waters during the Blues Revival of the sixties and he's been steady rollin ever since.

I met Nitro on the internet and they have a good reverbnation site. Nitro plays guitar and drums and they feature Ruthie on vocals. Reverbnation is a great place to find cool indie music. Go to reverbnation.com and search on Nitro Mean Streak Blues, Hairy Larry, or your other favorites. If you're promoting your music on the internet they have a great player widget and free mail list software. Here's Mean Streak Blues now and they're "Stuck In New York".

Nitro_Mean_Streak_Blues-ReverbNation-Monkey_On_My_Back.wav
Nitro_Mean_Streak_Blues-ReverbNation-Pet_The_Kitty.wav

And that's some more from Nitro, "Monkey On My Back" and "Pet The Kitty". I love it when someone puts some humor in their Blues.

We're cooking on KASU, closing out Something Blue with three hot songs from Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials. Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials are another great Chicago Blues Band. On the Alligator site they're compared to Hound Dog Taylor and The House Rockers, top praise from Alligator the company that brought you Hound Dog Taylor. You can also visit with the Ed Heads at liledandthebluesimperials.com where they've got a great photo gallery. We'll hear them play "Hold That Train", "Chicken Gravy And Biscuits", and "Compact Man".

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

David_Reo-Greatest_Hits_Volume_II-Detroit.wav

Oh yeah, that's David Reo singing "Detroit". David is an outstanding guitarist and songwriter. Kicking us off tonight we heard another David Reo song, "Mississippi Greyhound Blues".

Now we're going to get loud with some live recordings of Jimmy Lloyd Rea and the Switchmasters. Here he is telling us about a "Baker City Barbeque".

Jimmy_Lloyd_Rea-Cruzin_For_A_Bloozin-Baker_City_BBQ.wav

I'm Hairy Larry and you're listening to Something Blue on KASU. For more about Something Blue including podcasts and a liveblog discussion of this show in progress log on to deltaboogie.com on the internet.

We're featuring a live recording of Jimmy Lloyd Rea and the Switchmasters. The CD is called "Cruzin' for a Bloozin'" and it's live, loud, unrehearsed, and real. Listen to them now as they play "Runnin On Texas Time".

Jimmy_Lloyd_Rea-Cruzin_For_A_Bloozin-Runnin_On_Texas_Time.wav

Oh yeah, that's Jimmy Lloyd Rea and the Switchmasters "Runnin' On Texas Time" and just cooking.

Now here's Texas Jake Lee, the king of the Texas slide. We're going to slow things down a little bit with this lowdown groove he calls "Overseas Blues".

Texas_Jake_Lee-Blues_Following_Me-Overseas_Blues.wav

Jimmy_Lloyd_Rea-Cruzin_For_A_Bloozin-Life_On_The_Machine.wav

Jimmy Lloyd Rea is a Cruzin For A Bloozin. He was singing his own song, "Life On The Machine". This whole CD was recorded live. Jimmy Lloyd Rea on bass and vocals, with Reverend Dan and Jerry Smith on guitars, they really put on a great show.

Texas Jake Lee is a member of the Blues guitar gang, an informal gaggle of guitarists put together by my friend Mike Dollins. For more on Texas Jake Lee, Mike Dollins, Jimmy Lloyd Rea, and David Reo log on to deltaboogie.com on the internet. Now for some more from Texas Jake Lee. He's got a message here about how if we all sing the Blues maybe we can all get along.

Texas_Jake_Lee-Blues_Following_Me-If_We_All_Sing_The_Blues.wav

That was Texas Jake Lee singing the truth in a song he calls "If We All Sing The Blues". Jake Lee is the King of Slide. You can find him on MySpace, at Live Blues World, and at his website, jakeleeblues.com. He's a great songwriter and an outstanding musician.

I'm Hairy Larry and you're listening to Something Blue on KASU, the home of the Blues in Northeast Arkansas. We're gonna stay with Texas Jake Lee here. From the Blues Following Me album, Jake Lee "Can't Stand It.

Texas_Jake_Lee-Blues_Following_Me-Cant_Stand_It.wav

David_Reo-Greatest_Hits_Volume_II-Shoot_First.wav

All right, that's David Reo singing "Shoot First", a rocking Blues from his Greatest Hits, Volume II. David Reo is from Ventura, California and we have also featured him playing with his band, The Preachers. He's got your hot guitar and he knows how to mellow down easy. Now, closing the show, David Reo's gonna get all soulful with this great Blues song he wrote called "Not Fooling Around".

David_Reo-Greatest_Hits_Volume_II-Not_Fooling_Around.wav

We are now entering the internet only after hours portion of the show. George and I played a great set last night at Caffe Buono. We had a blast and it shines through. We kicked with three Dylan songs, "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues", "Memphis Blues Again", and "Visions Of Johanna". Then I took off my jester's hat and we did "Hesitation Blues" and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out". George sang "Route 66" and I closed the show with two of my own songs, "Can You Really?" and "Younger Days". Caffe Buono is a great venue and we always have a good time when we play there. So, just as timely as can be, here's Hairy Larry and George recorded on April 24, 2009, live at Caffe Buono.

Link rot is a fact of life on the internet and not all the songs in the radio show were still available at the time of the podcast. I substituted Hairy Larry and Rhode Island Red in for some of the Tampa Red and I also had to use different Bessie Smith songs then those listed. So don't let the wrong spoken parts throw you. It's just the internet. Different every day.

So this script is correct for the radio show but not for the podcast.

That's Mr. Joe Lee, from Jonesboro, Arkansas with two songs he wrote. "Boppin At The Forest" and "Too Much Blues". Joe is a fantastic musician, an originator of the Memphis Sound, and a Jazz composer, pianist, and saxman. We'll hear some more from Joe Lee later in the show.

I'm @hairylarryland on twitter where I started the Jazz Twibe. I met Geoff Lapp, a Jazz pianist from Canada on twitter. I love Jazz piano and I was glad to make his acquaintance. Here's The Geoff Lapp Trio now with one he wrote, "Yo Bro".

Melvin_Sparks_Band-5th_Annual_Jazz_and_Blues_Festival_June_19_2005-The_Governor.flac

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got live Jazz and Blues for you. Kicking us off tonight we heard the Melvin Sparks Band at the 5th Annual Jazz and Blues Festival recorded in Baltimore, Maryland on June 19, 2005. They were cooking through a song called "The Governor".

We have a special show tonight featuring all live concert music recorded at Jazz and Blues Festivals around the country and in Canada. These concerts are available on the internet at the Live Music Archive a part of the internet library, archive.org. So I'm hoping you will log on to archive.org and find tons of great concerts you love. And then I'm hoping you start attending some of these festivals and enjoying the music live. Because there's no music like live music. You just have to be there to get it.

And while you're on the internet be sure to log on to Delta Boogie for more about Something Blue. Our shows are available as podcasts so you can listen anytime from anywhere. That's deltaboogie.com on the internet. Then click on "Something Blue". We're on the internet and on KASU.

Coming up next we have some extended concert audio of the Derek Trucks Band recorded live at the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival on July 20, 2007. We will hear "Volunteered Slavery", "Up Above My Head", and "Crow Jane". There are many great Blues concerts by the Derek Trucks Band at the Live Music Archive. Like many great musicians in the twenty first century Derek Trucks supports free music.

Now just dig this flute solo on "Volunteered Slavery".

We're featuring live recordings from festivals tonight. Coming up next, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, recorded at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick on September 13, 2008. Yes they do get the Blues in Canada as Grace Potter is about to prove.

You're listenig to "Something Blue" on KASU.

We're gonna close like we opened with some great instrumental music from the Melvin Sparks Band, one called "Charley Brown". Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

Trafic_de_Blues-Fin_de_cavale-Tribute_to_the_kings.wav

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

Trafic_de_Blues-Fin_de_cavale-Steady_B.wav

All right now, you find the Memphis sound in the most unusual places. The band is called Trafic de Blues and they're from France. We heard "Tribute To The Kings" and "Steady B".

I found the band on jamendo.com, an internet site with thousands of free and legal downloads. The internet is a great place for independent artists to promote their music and Jamendo is a great website for the artists and their fans. All of the music I'm playing tonight is from Jamendo.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU and we're on the internet too. Log on to the Something Blue website at sbblues.com to hear the shows as podcasts anytime. And log on now to participate in the liveblog discussion about this show, in progress.

Next up another band from France called the jpfmband. Their album is called Paris SF and we'll hear "Besse A Stress" and "Shuffle For KM".

jpfmband-Paris_SF-Besse_A_Stress.wav
jpfmband-Paris_SF-Shuffle_for_KM.wav

Oh yeah, great music from the jpfmband. Go to jamendo.com to hear the whole album.

And now I've got Jampy. I won't try to pronounce the album name but it's spelled Nghzk, and the song is called "Trying to Play Some Jazzy Blues".

Jampy-Nghzk-Trying_to_Play_Some_Jazzy_Blues.wav

--

Jampy-Nghzk-Noris.wav
Amanova-single-What_a_way_to_be.wav

Ok now, kicking off the set, another one from Jampy called "Noris". And then the only vocal tonight. Amanova sang "What A Way To Be".

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU, the home of the Blues every Saturday night.

Next we have a band that mixes Jazz and the Blues into their own sound. They're called 2extended and here's "Caught In Your Dreams".

2Extended-Blue_Dreams_And_Musty_Watermelons-Caught_In_Your_Dreams.wav
2Extended-Blue_Dreams_And_Musty_Watermelons-Musty_Boogie.wav

All right, that's 2extended doing "Musty Boogie" from their CD Blue Dreams and Musty Watermelons. Closing the show tonight is another great song from Trafic de Blues, "From St. Denis". Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

John_Mullins_Band-Deep_River_Blues-jmband1999-02-17.AKG391.d1t06.wav

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

Max_Creek-Baby_Please_Dont_Go-mc1999-11-13d3t02.wav

All right, that's Max Creek doing a Blues standard, "Baby Please Don't Go". Before that we heard the John Mullins Band do the "Deep River Blues". Both of these songs and the entire show tonight come from the Live Music Archive, a collection of recordings of concert performances available for free on the internet at archive.org. I'm focusing this week on Jam Bands as it seems all of them have a fair amount of Blues in their repertoire.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU. As always we're jamming the Blues on Saturday night. Log on to the Something Blue website on the internet at sbblues.com and join me in an ongoing discussion about the show. You can also hear this show and past shows any time on our Something Blue podcasts. And there's more. Something Blue After Hours is available only on the internet. When it all don't fit in just one hour we go into After Hours for more great music.

I love the name of this next band. Here's the BlissNinnies, "Doin That Rag". Then we'll hear them cover the Allman Brother's "Whipping Post" and a Grateful Dead song called "The Eleven".

BlissNinnies-Doin_That_Rag-blissn1994-09-03t06.wav

John_Mullins_Band-Under_My_Thumb-jmband1999-02-17.AKG391.d1t05.wav

Now that's what I'm talking about. The John Mullins Band doing the Rolling Stones classic, "Under My Thumb. Now for a little change of pace here's David Gans singing "Lazy River Road".

David_Gans-Lazy_River_Road-dgans2009-03-03sbd_d2t03.wav
The_Gyps-In_My_Time_Of_Dying-gyps2009-02-19d1t06.wav

And that's The Gyps with "In My Time Of Dying" right here on KASU. We're playing all live recordings from archive.org tonight on Something Blue. Go to the Live Music Archive to hear the rest of these and many other great concerts.

Now, bringing us up to date with the Blues, here's Dumpstaphunk doing "You Can Make It If You Try" and "Deeper and Deeper".

Dumpstaphunk-You_Can_Make_It_If_You_Try-Deeper_And_Deeper-dumpsta2009-03-20t03.wav

After Hours

Ok, now, it's on to Something Blue After Hours, the internet only portion of the show. This week we're featuring some Dylan songs and some Dead songs sung by the featured bands in Jam Band Blues and sung by my duo, Hairy Larry and George. If you love Dylan and the Dead like I do you'll enjoy this. Thanks for listening.

jason_ricci-broken_toy.wav

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

jason_ricci-done_with_the_devil.wav

And that's Jason Ricci and New Blood from their new CD, Done With The Devil. That's some fine harmonica work there. We heard "Broken Toy" and the title track, "Done With The Devil". I've got a couple more for you from this fine CD. I'm going to do my best with this one. Heres' "Ptryptophan Pterodactyl".

jason_ricci-ptryptophan_pterodactyl.wav
jason_ricci-enlightenment.wav

Oh yeah, Jason Ricci getting a little bit different for us with one he calls "Enlightenment".

Following the KASU lead I'm always trying to find something different for Something Blue. If you're tired of hearing the some old stuff KASU is the place you want to be. And if you're on the internet check out the Something Blue website at sbblues.com. Log on now, follow the link, and chat with me about the Blues.

Now for a great guitarist from Wynne, Arkansas. John Shepherd's new CD is called So Low. Here he is now singing "Blues Train".

John_Shepherd-So_Low-Blues_Train.wav
John_Shepherd-So_Low-Delta_Queen.wav

Now that's what I'm talking about. John Shepherd and "Delta Queen". Now for something a little bit different from John, a kind of a love song he calls "I Want To Be The One".

John_Shepherd-So_Low-I_Want_To_Be_The_One.wav

-----

the_insomniacs-lonesome.wav

That's The Insomniacs singing "Lonesome". Their new CD is called At Least I'm Not With You. You know I like a little humor in my Blues. Just listen to these lyrics on, "She Can Talk".

the_insomniacs-she_can_talk.wav
the_insomniacs-at_least_im_not_with_you.wav
the_insomniacs-directly_from_my_heart_to_you.wav

All right, The Insomniacs with "Directly From My Heart To You". Before that we heard, "At Least I'm Not With You".

Something Blue is cooking on KASU. And when it comes to cooking it don't get no hotter than Smokin Joe Kubek and Bnois King. Here they are now doing "Don't Lose My Number".

smokin_joe_kubek_and_bnois_king-dont_lose_my_number.wav
smokin_joe_kubek_and_bnois_king-flamethrower.wav
smokin_joe_kubek_and_bnois_king-my_dogs_still_walkin.wav

And now you know why they call him Smokin Joe. We heard "Flamethrower" and "My Dog's Still Walkin".

Here's another song from the John Shepherd CD, So Low. I know you've been there on a "Date With The Blues".

John_Shepherd-So_Low-Date_With_The_Blues.wav

Closing the show John Shepherd's going to play "Humboogie". Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

John_Shepherd-So_Low-Humboogie.wav

After Hours

All right now, we're off the air and into the internet only, after hours part of the show. This week I'm featuring some Jazz guitar. Jack Jezzro plays "Autumn Leaves", "I've Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", and "Night and Day". And Ronnie Coletta is featured with Joe Lee on some of Joe's originals, "Amanda", "Kinda Tawny", and "Winter Blues". Plus one I recorded for a Joe Lee and Friends CD, the title track, "Boppin At The Forest".

This is some great Jazz so kick back and enjoy. After all, it's after hours!

I made a mistake. "Kinda Tawny" is also from the Bopping At The Forest CD and does not have Jazz guitar on it. Sorry bout that.

Mississippi_Millie-Front_Porch_Blues-Doing_That_Magic_Thing.mp3

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

Mississippi_Millie-Front_Porch_Blues-Handfull_of_Trouble.mp3

All right now, that's Mississippi Millie and she's got a "Handfull Of Trouble". She also opened the show with another song she wrote called "Doing That Magic Thing".

For more about Mississippi Millie and the other musicians featured on Something Blue check out Delta Boogie on the internet. You can also hear podcasts of the shows and participate in a liveblog discussion underway right now. Delta like the Mississippi Delta and boogie like Boogie Woogie, deltaboogie.com.

Will Riley recorded his "My Baby's Got Me By The Blues" album at Blues Alley in Jonesboro. Will wrote and sang all the songs and played guitar. Bix Smith also played guitar, on drums was John Sifford and Uldis Heyl on bass. Will is a great performer and he really has a way with lyrics.

Now, right here on KASU, here's his Gospel Blues, "Been Down To The Water".

Will_Riley-My_Babys_Got_Me_By_The_Blues-Been_Down_To_The_Water.wav
Will_Riley-My_Babys_Got_Me_By_The_Blues-Too_Far_Back_And_Too_Far_Gone.wav
Will_Riley-My_Babys_Got_Me_By_The_Blues-My_Babys_Got_Me_By_The_Blues.wav

And that's Will Riley with the title track of his CD, "My Baby's Got Me By The Blues". I like the song so much I've been singing it myself. Before that Will sang "Too Far Back And Too Far Gone".

Mississippi Millie was born in the Delta and she sung in Juke Joints as a child. When she was nine years old her mother moved to Pennsylvania. Three years later she was the little girl singing the Blues, her huge voice knocking out the audiences in Philadelphia. Here's another one from her CD, "Front Porch Blues". She calls it "Mississippi Woman".

Mississippi_Millie-Front_Porch_Blues-Mississippi_Woman.mp3

Part 2
--

Will_Riley-My_Babys_Got_Me_By_The_Blues-My_Babys_On_The_Phone_Line.wav

Oh yeah, another great song from Will Riley, "My Baby's On The Phone Line". Will was a regular at Blues Alley and he also performed at Blues Fest. Bix Smith played the other guitar on the CD. Bix was a Jazz musician and an outstanding artist. His paintings hung in the Blues Alley Gallery.

Ronnie Presley is from Caraway, Arkansas. I met him at the King Biscuit festival in Helena, Arkansas and he has performed at Blues Fest many times. I'm pleased to present songs from a live concert recorded at The Craighead Forest Bandshell. Ronnie's playing acoustic guitar and singing the Blues. We're gonna start right now with a Creedence song, "Who'll Stop The Rain".

Ronnie_Presley-Blues_Fest_Sept_14_2008-Wholl_Stop_The_Rain_pod_mix.wav
Ronnie_Presley-Blues_Fest_Sept_14_2008-Had_The_Blues_This_Sunday_Morning_pod_mix.wav

Ronnie_Presley-Blues_Fest_Sept_14_2008-Good_Day_For_The_Blues_pod_mix.wav

And that's Ronnie Presley recorded live at the Craighead Forest Bandshell. He sang "Good Day For The Blues". Before that he did a Stevie Ray Vaughan song, "Life By The Drop". And before that one of his own, "Had The Blues This Sunday Morning". Ronnie is an extremely versatile performer, playing solo or with a band his repertoire covers Rock, Blues, and Country music.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU.

Suzanne Michell is another gifted and versatile performer. When she got an electric guitar I said now she's electric and eclectic. These next recordings are unlike anything I've ever heard her do. Traditional songs sung in close harmonies bordering on vocalese. Here she is now with a Steven Foster song, "Hard Times Come Again No More".

Suzanne_Michell-Playhouse_Sampler-Hard_Times.wav
Suzanne_Michell-Songs_Ive_Always_Sung-Swing_Low_Sweet_Chariot.wav

And that's Suzanne Michell laying the harmonies on us with a Gospel standard, "Swing Low Sweet Chariot". Closing the show she's doing the "Rising Sun Blues". Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

It was my birthday in 1969 and I took the whole party to see Hound Dog Taylor at Alice's Restaurant on the North Side of Chicago. There was a jam in progress when we got there and the jam band sounded great. We were already dancing when Hound Dog Taylor and The Houserockers took the stage. They sounded like nothing we'd ever heard before. That bass, that raw slide, the energy and spirit. It was overwhelming. And it had just begun.

The Blues scene in Chicago is a tight circuit and the word gets out who's hot when. There was a parade of Bluesmen jamming with the Houserockers that night. When they finally finished it was like we were still dancing on the first song. We'll hear "Give Me Back My Wig", "Gonna Send You Back To Georgia", "See Me In The Evening", and "Take Five" from the Deluxe Edition CD. Thanks to musicalley.com for making these songs available for this podcast.

I'm also featuring four songs by my band, The Mudcats, "Green Onions", "Sevens And Nines", "Surprise Blues", and "House Of The Rising Sun". The Mudcats feature George Hinds on bass and Randy Gambill on drums. Also playing with the Mudcats are special guests Robb Shelley on keys and Chris "Stinger" Stevens on guitar. On "House Of The Rising Sun" we had Scott Mathes on guitar.

Enjoy!

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

Chester_Jetton-White_Gold-White_Gold.wav
Sam_Turpin-Memphis_Blue-Farm_Boy_Blues.wav

Kicking us off tonight we heard Sam Turpin sing "St. James Infirmary". Then Chester Jetton sang his own song called "White Gold". Then back to Sam with a message song he wrote called "Farm Boy Blues". All three of these songs were recorded at Sam's studio outside of Goobertown, Arkansas.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU and we're featuring some Country Blues tonight. Blues, Country, and Gospel share a common American heritage and a music history that intertwines throughout the twentieth century. For more about Something Blue and these fantastic musicians log on to Delta Boogie on the internet. You'll find pictures, videos, and podcasts of the shows. And that's Sam Turpin doing the title song of his new CD, "Memphis Blue". Sam has been doing music around Jonesboro for years and years. When you see him tell him you heard him on Something Blue.

Now for some live recordings, The Wolfpack Band live at the Craighead Forest Bandshell recorded on May 18, 2008. Like all Country bands the Wolfpack can't get through a set without doing some Blues. Here they are live with four Blues songs, "The Wolfpack Shuffle", "Don't Be Cruel", "Suzy Q", and "Folsom Prison Blues.

Oh yeah, The Wolfpack Band recorded live at the Bandshell right here on KASU, home of the Blues every Saturday night.

Now from Little Rock, Arkansas here's a very versatile band, "The Salty Dogs". Their Country music has more than a little bit of Blues in it. From their CD "Autoharpoon" here's "Water To Wine. Just listen to the outstanding Blues guitar in this country setting.

All right now that's The Salty Dogs. We heard "When My Blood Runs Cold". Before that we heard "Heaven's Gates, Hell's Flames". All three of the songs we featured from "Autoharpoon" are originals.

And now, taking us home on a mellow note here's Sam Turpin singing another one he wrote called "When The Sun Goes Down". Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

Something Blue - Blues Poetry

Snake_Charmers-Been_Gone_Too_Long-Move_On_Blues.wav

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

Snake_Charmers-Been_Gone_Too_Long-Big_Big_Love.wav

All right now, it's the Snake Charmers giving us some "Big Big Love". A great band I met through the Blues Twibe on Twitter. They started the show with "Move On Blues". Both originals from their "Gone Too Long" CD.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU. Log on to the Something Blue website at sbblues.com and follow the link to the liveblog discussion of this show in progress. I'm online right now, chatting about the Blues.

I've got some Blues Poetry for you. Jonesboro resident Richard Murray wrote the words and collaborated with Larry Baugh on these next two, "Writing Lines" and "Rain Fell Hard". Listen closely. Richard has definitely got something to say.

Kenny_Crider-Bottomland-Look_At_Me.wav

We're gonna mix it up a little bit this set with some Country music and some Rockabilly. That was Kenny Crider and Bottomland from Swifton, Arkansas playing "Look At Me". Kenny really puts the story into his songs. Here he is singing "Gonna Get Me A Lawyer".

Kenny_Crider-Bottomland-Gonna_Get_Me_A_Lawyer.wav
Kenny_Crider-Bottomland-Double_Your_Love.wav

Oh yeah, Kenny Crider and Bottomland doing one of Kenny's songs, "Double Your Love". Kenny Crider has played at the Craighead Forest Bandshell and he performs frequently around Swifton.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU, the home of the Blues in Northeast Arkansas every Saturday night.

And now, from Bono Arkansas, here's The Great Larry Donn singing "Chatanooga Shoeshine Boy" and "Mona Lisa".

Here he is now joining Larry Donn on "Wild One". We'll also hear "Old Time Rock and Roll" and "Hemmorhoid Blues". Until next time this is Hairy Larry. Keep on rocking.

Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the Blues, for you.

Moonalice-2008-01-12-d1t03_Crazy_In_Heaven.wav

All right. We're listening to Moonalice recorded live at The Sitzmark on January 12, 2008. That last song was "Crazy In Heaven" and we kicked it off with "Can't Hold On". Moonalice-2008-01-12-d1t04_Fair_To_Even_Odds.wav
Moonalice-2008-01-12-d1t05_I_Aint_Ever_Satisfied.wav

And that's Moonalice doing "I Ain't Ever Satisfied". Great song and a great performance.

"Moonalice is a Native American tribe that dates back to the beginning of time. According to Moonalice legend, the tribe descends from Piltdown Woman, or possibly from a couple of naked, snake-charmed gardeners who liked to hang around with friendly dinosaurs."

You can learn more about Moonalice at their website, moonalice.com. Click Music for many more live shows and some studio tracks, all legal downloads. Quoting them now from their Music page.

"The music you download from this page is free for your listening pleasure. If you like our music, pay it forward to your friends. Turn them on. It's about the music."

Now we're gonna bring Moonalice back to Arkansas. Here's the Sonny Boy Williamson Blues Classic, "Eyesight To The Blind".

They have collaborated with Béla Fleck, David Grisman, John Scofield, Mike Gordon, Richie Havens, and Martin Sexton. So you can see they're drawing from Bluegrass, Blues, and Jazz styles, all of it rocking. This is some fine music.

Assembly Of Dust has a website at aodust.com. Reid Genauer has a blog there where he discusses his collaborations.

You're listening to Something Blue on KASU and we're featuring live concert audio from the Live Music Archive at archive.org. Listen to Something Blue on the interent any time at sbblues.com.

mark_kerr-low_down_dirty_shame.mp3

All right now. It's Mark Kerr talking about a "Low Down Dirty Shame". And kicking us off tonight, Arkansas guitarist Luther Allison was getting "Low Down And Dirty". Some great Blues from some great guitarists.

Here's Mark Kerr again singing about another low down place, "One Drink Away From The Blues".

This is Something Blue on KASU. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got some live music to close out the show. Two songs by Tinsley Ellis, "The Last Song" and "Double Eyed Whammy". Listen to this amazing guitar work. Tinsley Ellis really gets the crowd going.

After Hours - podcast only

On June 27, 2009 I had family in to visit. We went to the Crowley's Ridge State Park for food, fun, and conversation. George and I played a set and we were joined by Kier on hambone and little Belle sang "Jesus Loves Me". It was a great time.

For After Hours tonight I'm playing that show. Enjoy!

On May, 20, 2007 musicians from all over Arkansas converged on the Craighead Forest Bandshell. We called it the Arkansas Blues Caravan and we are playing live recordings from that show tonight for Something Blue on KASU.

Kicking us off we heard Suzanne Michell sing the "St. James Infirmary Blues". She was joined by Uncle Fred Wilson on harmonica and Blind Boy White on the slide trombone.

Then a short set from Jawbone and Jolene. They sang "New Stranger Blues", "The Evil That You Know", and "Blanket Of Blues".

Now for a Blues Rock number featuring Sandy and Roy McCann. Listen to Sandy sing about her "HiFi Daddy".

Oh yeah, Sandy and Roy McCann delivering some Blues with a Gospel message called "Run On". Before that Blind Boy White did one he wrote called "Talk About Something Blue".

And that's what we're talking about right here on KASU.

Now for a Blues Medley from Ben Brenner. Ben also played with The Big Blue Cats and some of the cats joined Sandy and Roy during their set. Blind Boy White joined Suzanne and Fred. And I had to help out the Big Blue Cats with their Butterfield song. I couldn't help myself. It just wouldn't be right without the harp. That's what Sandy was talking about when she said it's always different when you play it jam style.

Now here's Ben.

And that's the Big Blue Cats doing an Albert King song, "Crosscut Saw". We're going to let them close the show with some Butter, "Born In Chicago". Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, Blues is the mainstream.

Big_Blue_Cats-Born_In _Chicago - Big_Blue_Cats-Born_In _Chicago.wav

In the After hours segment of the show we'll hear Ronnie Presley recorded at the Craighead Forest Bandshell and Hairy Larry and George recorded at Caffe Buono, also in Jonesboro.

Ronnie will sing Bring It On Home, Had The Blues This Sunday Morning, I Believe, and Heaven On Earth. George and I do Guitar Blues, You win Again, Route 66, Hard Times, My Sticks Always Getting In The Way, and Gotta Serve Somebody.

These were both great shows and I was lucky to get good recordings. These songs are some of the highlights. You can hear everything at archive.org. Enjoy!
